Homeroom Teacher: Ms. Nugent
Seventh-grade Literature covers a variety of Common Core skills. Some important topics include story elements, point of view, characterization, mood and theme. The Literature textbook is used as well as novels and a poetry unit. Writing is often tied in with the Literature skills.
Writing is the primary goal in Language Arts. By the end of the year students will have written narrative, expository, argumentative, and research papers while incorporating fundamental grammar skills.
US history from the 1400s through pre-Civil War is the focus of seventh-grade History. In addition, the US and Illinois Constitution units are taught. At the end of the year, students will have an understanding of the workings of our government, it’s founding, and important historical events prior to the Civil War. Daily news reports encourage students to be aware of local, national and world events.
We are also trying to use common core standards in 7th and 8th-grade math. All three classes are finding the math more difficult because common core pushes the content ahead. Some of what the 6th graders are doing used to be in 7th grade; some of what the 7th graders are doing used to be in 8th grade; and some of what the 8th graders are doing used to be taught in algebra. When we get the new series for 7th and 8th next year, the transition for the 7th graders should be easier, and the 8th graders will be well prepared for high school math.
