Welcome to Gifford Grade School Music! I am so excited to have the opportunity to share music with the students in Gifford.
At Gifford Grade School, children’s musical learning is based on integrating the philosophies of two music educators: Carl Orff, Zoltan Kodaly.
The Orff method is a way of teaching children about music that engages their mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing, improvising, composing, acting and the use of percussion instruments. Lessons are presented with an element of “play” helping children learn at their own level of understanding.
Some of the Kodaly goals/core beliefs: improve music literacy in schools, everyone is capable and has a right to musical literacy, singing is the foundation of musical learning and music should begin with the very young, following a child’s natural learning development.
Students in grades K-5 receive instruction in music each day for thirty minutes. During class students will be moving, playing instruments, reading music and creating their own music!
Students in grade 6-8 have the opportunity to join chorus or band which meets every other day of the school week. In our ensembles, students work on blending their sounds with others, as well as developing their own independent voices. They also have a chance to participate in the regional solo and ensemble contest.
I look forward to getting to know the Gifford families. Please feel free to stop by or email of you would like any additional information or have any questions. You can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
